Citizen Cope represents the work of Clarence Greenwood, an innovative singer/songwriter whose meld of folk, blues, hip-hop, and various other styles has earned him both critical acclaim and commercial success. After emerging from Washington, D.C. in the late ’90s, Greenwood endured a series of record-label mishaps which might have derailed a less tenacious talent. Instead, Citizen Cope’s positive outlook and steadfast resolve helped give his music staying power. Known for signature tracks like “Let the Drummer Kick” and “Sideways,” Cope outlasted the major-label system and by the time he’d formed his own independent label, he was enjoying the highest chart placements of his career, particularly with 2012’s One Lovely Day. After remaining relatively quiet in the studio, he returned with the buoyant Heroin and Helicopters in 2019, followed by 2021’s stripped-down acoustic set, The Pull of Niagara Falls.
